Suite 803 Reunion

I have been working hard to order my bridesmaid dress internationally. The plan is to ship it to Lily, who will bring it to me when she comes to visit me in July! I AM SO EXCITED TO SEE HER.

I am currently saving money to be able to buy the plane tickets home in August. (I had a dream last night that a plane ticket from Nashville to New York was only $106USD. Is that for real?) I think the current plan is to buy a ticket from Taipei to Nashville, then Nashville to New Jersey (wedding), and New Jersey back to Taipei.

Girls, be prepared. It will be like this again in 159 days.

Changes Continued

My blogging has slowed down a bit due to the fact that when I mentioned life changes, I really meant big life changes. And I wasn’t quite ready to share yet, but I really can’t hide forever, right?

As most of you know, I came back to Taiwan with the continuation of a previous relationship. We had agreed on trying the long-distance thing as we prepare for the next chapter in our lives after college graduation. But sometimes long-distance relationships work, and sometimes they don’t. Unfortunately, in this case, it did not. I think we did everything we could to successfully maintain the long-distance, and we did all the right things. However, this relationship ended amicably under the circumstances that people change and I realized that we were headed in different directions in our lives.

C’est la vie.

Change is Good

Iba regresando a los estados unidos este agosto, pero por la economía, me decidió quedarme por otro año más.

I learned this sentence today during my language exchange outing. It says, I was going to return to the United States this August, but because of the economy, I decided to stay for another year.

I was planning on returning this August, but things have changed. Plans have changed, and my life has changed. I plan on getting my master’s in business, and so I will be studying for the GMAT for the next few months and start looking at schools soon. The business schools could be anywhere, from the States to Japan, but that will come in time. I feel that I should maximize on the Asia market right now, and I realized that my fluent English skills here are more valuable than my intermediate Chinese in the US.

I will be back in August for a few weeks and also to attend a wedding. But as for now, Taipei will be home, which means all of you must make a trip out here to visit me.

Me Gustan Lenguajes

On Saturday, during my lunch break, I ate at my usual breakfast place across from my school that I’ve been going to for the past six months. When I walked in that day, I saw a Latino couple sitting at a table chatting with a white guy. When the guy left, my curiosity got the best of me and I asked them, in English, where they were from. I explained that I took Spanish in college and had a fascination to all things of that culture. They invited me to come sit with them, and we sat and chatted for a bit as they insisted that I try using my broken Spanish. I found out they were from Colombia, and they moved to Taiwan because of job placement and love it here. I also found out that the family that owns the breakfast place is from Honduras, and they all speak Spanish fluently along with Chinese. If I had known this earlier, I could have been practicing my Spanish with them!

La mujer and I set up a date to allow me to practice and learn more Spanish, so I met with her today for my first lesson. I spent two hours listening to her talk about her hometown in Colombia, her travel experiences, the Spanish culture, the language, and many other things. It was an amazing opportunity, and I was rather impressed with myself at how much vocabulary I retained from college. Because it has been almost a year since I’ve listened to a lecture in Spanish, I had to concentrate very very hard during the two hours. I think it was the most thinking-and-effort-required thing I’ve done since I’ve been in Taiwan. She set me up with tarea to listen to a Juanes CD (whom she knew as a kid cause they’re from the same city) and to listen to news from Colombia. On Sunday, we’re going to meet up again and go to a Spanish bookstore and grab dinner. I should expect to be fluent in six months.

You can take the girl out of the culture, but you can’t take the culture out of the girl. Even here, I will keep up with my Spanish. Once I’ve mastered this, on to Japanese.

Action (Verbs)-Packed Sunday

Ate a delicious lunch. Attempted to go to Costco. Became discouraged by the line of cars around the block, trying to get into the parking lot, as well as the line of people trying to get into the door.

Took a nice walk to Chiang Kai Shek in the beautiful weather. Went to see the Andy Warhol exhibit there. Discovered that it was not as “mind-blasting” as it should have been – way too many people, and not enough art.

Watched the boys play basketball. Threw a football around with them. Impressed them with my mad skillz.

Consumed an even more delicious dinner. Learned how to play dominoes. Ate lots of papaya. Slept like a rock.
