Sleeeeep

I’m so tired.

Since break started, I have been going to bed around 4am in the morning, and then waking up around noon to entertain or hang out with family. After a week of Nine Percent, Roxy 99, Luxy, meeting new people, late-night mahjong-playing, watching YesMan, playing cards at a teahouse til four in the morning, I’m exhuasted. I’m 23 years old now, I think I’m on the cusp of my prime to be living this lifestyle. I actually have another week of this to look forward to since we have a two-week-long break.

Tomorrow, Jen, my cousin Jim, and I are taking a trip to Kenting for three days, two nights. It’s going to be magical.

I really just want to sleep.

Weekend Disappointment

I haven’t had a real meal in like three days. I’ve been so busy with work and stuff that I just grab a quick bite or snack on crackers. Last night was Saturday night, so I was totally expecting a real Saturday night dinner at a place with servers and stuff, but instead we ended up at Subway. The sandwich was probably the saddest-looking thing in my life. Today, I skipped lunch because I had to run errands with my aunt. Tonight, I was hoping to be redeemed but Jen ate an odd hour and is now not hungry for food. So I’m resigned to making a delicious meal for myself like I did the other day. (see below)

We saw Tropic Thunder, which was absolutely ridiculous. However, I totally thought that the little “previews” and “Booty Sweat” were actually real and was totally shocked as to what they were thinking until ten minutes into the actual movie. And Tom Cruise probably had the best performance to “Get Low”.

Fun Fact: Men carry their girlfriends’ and wives’ purses here. Not hold for the women while they pop into the fitting room, but actually carry the bags on their shoulders as they walk through the streets. And sometimes if the men walk away from their girlfriend/wife to look at something or go into another store, then it just looks like they’re just men walking around with a really cute pink patent leather bag. I’ve seen one too many guys with really cute purses and have been really tempted to just go up to them and give them a compliment. I don’t know how that would go over though.

To Be (Fat) or Not To Be

We found an amazing hole-in-the-wall place called La Casita that has really good Mexican food and perfectly balanced margaritas. We went on Saturday night, and there was no one there, so we had the whole ten-table place to ourselves. I got a Mexican pizza because I’ve been craving the one from Taco Bell. This was nothing like Taco Bell’s, but it was heavenly. The owner kept talking to us throughout our meal, explaining that her food was really good, as well as everything else there, because she’s spent 20 years perfecting it. But it was really worth the experience.

We went and watched the House Bunny last night. It was incredibly cheesy, but I thought it was cute and it made me miss college a lot.

Fun Fact: All the kids’ school uniforms here have numbers on them, kind of like prison uniforms.

Not-So-Fun Fact: I’m 5’4″, 120-125 lbs, which is about the average healthy weight for women, right? The average Taiwanese girl here is about 5’2″ and weighs about 100 lbs. The girls here are ultra-thin and ultra-pale. No one exercises here so the majority of them have no toneness nor curves, just a lot of thinness.

Well, here in Taiwan compared to the other girls, apparently I’m a gigantic walrus with a tan. I’ve already gotten the fat comment one too many times, especially from my relatives. Now, all my horrible childhood memories of my mother calling me fat are resurfacing. I totally understand where she gets it now.

I got asked directions three times today by three completely different people. I don’t know where I am half the time, much less be able to give directions. If I look like such an outsider here, then why do people keep insisting on asking me these things?

Weekend-ish

Saturdays are tough. I woke up at 8am this morning to be at work to teach my junior high class of three girls from 10am-12pm. And then I had to kill an hour before my next tutoring shift from 1:30-3:30pm. I got home around 4:30 and took a nap. I’m working 8-5 on a Saturday. Man.

My cousin took us to this little “Abercrombie & Fitch” outlet in this alley. It was basically a little store filled with clothes from Target, Hollister, American Eagle, A&F, etc. I ended up buying three shirts because they were on sale. I seriously traveled all the way to this island to buy imported clothes from the States. What’s wrong with me?

We also watched Righteous Kill, which I thought was rather good. Then again, I’m not a movie connoisseur like Rotten Tomatoes. I will always love Robert DeNiro, especially after his role in Stardust.

Jen showed me this article in the NYTimes, a travel section article about food in Taipei. Now we know where to go.

Jen also has put up pretty amazing pictures of the apartment. It makes our place look a hundred times sunnier than it really is. The one below was taken by her, so go to her blog for more.

Thank goodness tomorrow is Sunday, and I don’t have to be anywhere at any time.

One Week Already

I can’t believe it’s already been one week today since we’ve been here today.

I have a cell phone. A pink Nokia, how fitting.

The past two days have been filled with job interviews. I had one at David’s English School yesterday, where I had to fill out an application take a grammar test first. Is it “have often been” or “often have been”? Is it “old red Spanish leather boots” or “red old Spanish leather boots”? Geez, it’s been forever since I’ve learned grammar rules, much less remember them. I think I passed, or else she would have thanked me and not bothered to continue the interview. I have to go back on Monday to do a teaching demo targeted towards adults at the intermediate level. Guess what topic she gave me? Wait for it.. shopping. Is it fate? Possibly.

Today was jam packed with more interviews with a lot of getting lost. Our first appointment was at 10:30am across town, so we decided to head out an hour early. After getting on a bus, then a subway, then a bus again, we got to the general area where we were supposed to be. But after following the directions given, we ended up at a completely non-English-school-looking store. After a few phone calls, we finally made it to the school.. 45 minutes late. The teacher looked us over, proceeded to show us the school and the materials they use for their students, told us the hours and the salary, and then asked us when can we let her know when we can start. The whole process took about ten minutes.

The second appointment was at 2pm in a different part of time. Not so lost this time, since my uncle drove us. We actually went through an interview this time, and she also had us do a teaching demo for four students age 5-8. (You can never tell with Asian people. They all look much younger than they really are.) I taught them numbers and passed out stickers. I would say it went pretty well, but afterwards she kind of rushed us out the door. Hopefully, it really was because she was late for that meeting. We’ll see if we get a phone call in the next few days.

Third interview was at 6pm in a totally different part of town at the American Club. Yes, it was quite filled with Americans and looked really nice. I would want to check it out someday when my American friends come and visit me. (*hint*hint*) That went rather well since it mostly consisted of him telling me about his school and the curriculum. It sounded fabulous, and the pay is really well, but the only downfall is that it’s only part time. But I could totally find something part time in the morning. I have to hear back from him also, but he did ask me when could I let him know by as well so that can only mean that it’s pretty much in the bag, right?

We shall see. I have a feeling that by this time next week, the job search should be over, and I will have a job.

*Update*
Just got back from Made of Honor. Totally adorable and cheesy. Drag your date to it. I promise a good time. In the meantime, take care and talk to you again soon.
