Reading is FUN

My wonderful boyfriend got me an Amazon Kindle for my birthday, and it’s the most amazing thing ever. He even got me the beautiful leather cover to go with it.

The Kindle is amazing. I can read anytime, anywhere, without having to haul heavy books around or pay ridiculous sums to obtain them abroad. I also don’t have wait months for the new releases here. The screen is just like paper, so there’s no glare to tire the eyes like computer screens. I can highlight and make notes, I can look up words I don’t know while I read, and I can even buy more books wirelessly. This thing is going to be the death of me, well actually, more so my bank account.

The books are definitely cheaper too. The new releases, like the NYT Bestsellers, will run about $9.99USD ($11.99 abroad) and that’s about the highest most of the books will go. I just bought all of the Sherlock Holmes stories and books (we’re talking hundreds of stories here) for $2.99! The purchase was partly because the movie is coming out, and partly because I’ve already read them all, and they’re just a great collection to have on hand.

I won’t lie. The electronic stuff doesn’t compare to the actual tactile feel of a book. The weight and the smell of the paper makes it easier to get the lost in the world of adventure and imagination. Being able to physically turn the pages in eagerness to find out what happens next or dreadfully slow to delay the inevitable is an experience that is unrivaled. Books are delicious and fulfilling for the soul and should live on forever. However, for me, constantly on the move, living away from the sources of literary delights, this is definitely the best way to have an entire library at my leisure.

Week in Pictures

After the past two weeks of constant rain, this was a rare time when the sun finally came out accompanied by some nice fluffy clouds.

Waiting in my empty classroom for classes to start.

Riding on the back of Michael’s cool orange scooter.

Trying to find a spot in the scooter parking lot at the Guang Hua Digital Plaza so I could go buy an external hard drive.

My first time setting foot in Da-An Park since I’ve been in Taipei. I’ve forgotten what green looked like.

Due to a random number generator, the winner of the giveaway was Eric! (And no, you cannot give up your vote to Jen because she’s my roommate.) So if you’ll email me your mailing address, I’ll send a package full of these goodies to you. :)

Productive Day

Things Accomplished Today
Taught one class of second-graders.

Bought a heater. Now we won’t freeze to death in our own home.

Bought 3 books:
The Portrait of a Lady
by Henry James
Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell by Susanna Clarke
A Concise Chinese-English Dictionary for Lovers by Xiaolu Guo
(No, it’s not a real dictionary. It’s a fiction book written in Engrish about a Chinese girl living in London, trying to learn English and meeting an older Englishman.)

Bought Wang Lee-Hom’s new album. I love him. And always will. Regardless of the rumors. (Look at him yourself, how do you NOT want to marry him?)

Got a shoulder and foot massage, which was recommended by Jen’s boss for the past month. Basically subjected ourselves to torture for $500. It’s supposed to hurt because the shoulders holds all the stress and the feet contain all the points connected to the rest of the body, so the harder they push, the better it is for the organs. (Oh, eastern medicine. It’s magical but very painful.) But afterwards, we’re supposed to have more energy, better blood circulation, and our feet feel lighter. I believe it. I’m tempted to try the full body one, just to see how much pain I can endure. Pain is beauty, right?

Finished my template. Header was created by Jen. (Isn’t she art-tastic?)

I am a Princess!

Because we missed last Friday due to the four-day weekend we got for New Year’s, we have to make it up today. So instead of Saturday classes, today is another Friday. And Friday’s are my longest days. It’s rather depressing. But today is also test day, and I love test days because they’re quiet and occupied for the majority of the class. There are two more weeks until we get two weeks off for Chinese New Year! I can’t wait!

Last night after work, I was at the bus stop, waiting to go home, when I turned around and saw Yosa Cosmetics was having a going-out-of-business sale. Naturally, I just had to poke my head in and look around. Fifteen minutes later, I left with a bag full of stuff. Willpower? Not so much.

I got this perfume for 40% off! And it comes with a nifty ring!

Apparently, the theme of this week is Princess Tina.

Short Weekends

Saturday: I worked for two hours instead of four because my tutoring got canceled. I went and got a hair cut and relaxed in a salon chair about about two hours. Then shopping at Xinmending, which is the teen capital of Taipei, and where there always will be lots of good shopping. We had dinner at a steak place where I got confused about how to order the temperature of the steak. Here, they ask what percentage do you want the steak cooked. So you would equate 50% with medium, right? Well, apparently it doesn’t work like that because my steak was definitely still mooing when it came out, and I couldn’t really stomach it.

Then out to J’s Place, a wine bar, that serves American-esque food and snacks i.e. lots of cheeses, tomato and mozzarella, cheese & salami plate, etc. We order a plate of nachos, which turns out to be Doritos with really good salso on them. It was genius. I usually don’t even eat Doritos, but these were amazing.

Sunday: I spent the day with my American grandparents at their amazing new apartment. They live in a high-rise, gated community in Dansui with a gym, movie theatre, basketball courts, ping-pong and pool tables, indoor pool. It was really nice, and their doors have these electronic locks on them. None of that old-school key in keyhole stuff.

We played some pingpong and went walking around the tourist area by Dansui. Afterwards, my aunt took me to the ShiLin night market where I bought a stash of winter clothes. I shouldn’t worry about getting cold here anymore, neither do I need to go shopping at malls anymore. Street vendors are where it’s at. I also brought home some stinky tofu for Jen to try. Last time we tried it, it was a horrible experience. We got it from a stand up the street, and it tasted and smelled terrible. I couldn’t let Jen have that impression of stinky tofu forever, so I had to redeem myself by getting her legit and tasty stinky tofu.

My weekends go by way too fast. Before I know it, it’s another work week again.
